I’ve only ever met him once, at a poetry reading at a university near my school. I came into the reading with a set of presuppositions of sorts about poets, not flattering ones, either, but within the first three minutes of his reading, he proved every single one of them wrong. I was expecting smugness, heinous pretense, obscurity for the sake of obscurity, but what I got instead was a sense that this was an intelligent man who knew he was intelligent, yet, would still be a pleasure to talk to. He was clearly very knowledgable, very well read, an altogether well spoken individual, but, where in others those traits are easily associated with self-importance, egoism, and pretense, in Mr. Pinsky they were more fitly described as befitting of someone of his stature and accomplishments, and thus, worthy of admiration. All my life I’ve associated being an intellectual as an unfortunate prerequisite for social alienation and an inability to relate to others, but Mr. Pinsky showed me, an impressionable teenager of only 17, that this was not necessarily the case. I could, in theory, pursue the acquisition of knowledge with the vim and vigor of a scholar and still retain the ability to make people want to hold a conversation with me. It wasn’t impossible. It could be done. That poetry reading gave me hope. I don’t aspire to be a poet, but I do aspire to have the same kind of solid sense of self that Robert Pinsky does some day.

— I’m currently gearing up to play with a fairly prestigious bagpipe band in Texas, and, with a little hard work and persistence, I’ll be playing at (and winning) the World Pipe Band Championships in August. I’m making good progress, but it’s hard~ Aah!

— I spent seven weeks in the north of France over the summer with an exchange programme and was awarded the Certificate of Excellence.

—I was promoted to shift leader at my first job a little while ago! My mom told me straight out that she thought I’d be fired after the second day, so I’m pretty happy with myself, if only for proving her wrong~

passcode 4 iu = hey fuck off please

passcode 4 iu = hey fuck off please

trip preparation

possibilities 4research

Double-consciousness – measuring himself by someone else

More of an elevated diction – begins by theorizing the experience of slavery – a macro account of slavery (an abstraction), ideologically,

Phyllis Wheatley (1760) – had to be published in London b/c sued for authenticity (didn’t think she...

Phyllis Wheatley (1760) – had to be published in London b/c sued for authenticity (didn’t think she wrote it herself); poet.

African American lit separated out into pejorative (not taken seriously, writes well for a slave, but not v. well in general) and more positive à can now study African American lit as a subgenre.

1901-1903 two writers emerge – Booker T. Washington and DuboisWashington – skill-set of African Americans should be based on the farm (“Cast down your buckets”), Up From Slavery

W.E.B. Dubois – v. well educated, ideas about equality of education – black students should be educated along the same lines as white students;

Marcus Garvey’s back to Africa movement – not popular enough to merit a lot of movement, but persisted into MLK Jr. era. Created a sense of heritage of America before it was American (embracing of a more ancient past was a way of restoring a culture):

me three years ago: I’m shy so I don’t talk to people
